I absolutely love trail running but I never did enough races to warrant purchasing a pair of trail running specific shoes. Fortunately, several weeks ago I was asked by Saucony to review their Peregrine 4 trail running shoe.

To test the shoes I went on two long trail runs at Wekiwa Spring State Park (see one of my previous trail run experiences at this park here).  Both runs were between 11 and 13 miles. The terrain is wet, sandy, muddy, full of tree roots and hilly.  It's a pretty diverse area and therefore is a good test for the shoe.

Unwisely, I ran a pretty good distance on these shoes without breaking them in first. After both runs  (even without breaking them in) I fell in love with this shoe.  They are light weight, flexible, comfortable and provide great traction.  The shoe also dries out fast after it gets wet.  The shoe fits and feels like a slipper while providing a great amount of traction on the difficult terrain.  They have a 4mm heal drop like my street running shoes so they feel almost identical.

Overall this is an awesome trail running shoe.  Runners World (see link below) gave this shoe the "Editor Choice" award and I have to agree with their recommendation.  I would highly recommend the Saucony Peregrine 4 to any serious trail runner.  I have no complaints about this shoe.  They are a joy to wear.

But don't just take my word for it.  See these other reviews:

Throw away those extra tubes and CO2s and replace it with nutritious BEER!!  This new leather growler, bike carrier may be on my Ironman bike in November.  It carries one gallon of your favorite commercial, craft or homebrewed beer which will guarantee you are properly hydrated for the run portion of the race. :-)

Swimming In A Green Swimming Pool - St Patty's Day

The school where I do my Masters swimming, turned their 700,000 gallon pool green for St Patty's Day.  It was interesting swimming a the green haze.  I think the 1.5 hour swim this morning turned my teeth green.  :-)

Saucony Mirage 4 Men's Shoe Review

Saucony Mirage 4 Men's Shoe Review

Shoe Details from the Saucony Mirage 4 website. See here

I was asked to do a review of the brand new Saucony Mirage 4 men's shoe.  Let me just state I am just Joe Blow runner.  I know very little about shoe construction and all the technical details.

Last year I was fortunate enough to be asked to review the Mirage 3.  My review of that shoe model is located here.

The Mirage 3 is my current running shoe.  I transitioned from the Nike Pegasus.  There is a huge difference between the Mirage 3 and the Pegasus.  The major difference being the heal drop.  The Pegasus has a 12mm heal drop and both the Saucony Mirage 3 and 4 have a 4mm heal drop.

The heal drop was a big concern for me when I first started using the shoe.  I slowly transitioned into the Mirage 3 and found the that I quickly got use to the shoe and learned to love it.  The heal drop does not seem to make any notable difference in my running quality or times.

What I really do notice in both the Mirage 3 & 4 is that they are really light weight, lack stitching and have a cloth like material.  They are like wearing a glove. Both the Mirage models are great, comfortable and light weight shoes.

I notice very little difference between the Mirage 3 and 4. The Mirage 4 did seem to have a little bit more arch support (which I am not sure if I like yet or not).  The new Mirage 4 also seemed a little bit more cushioned in the heal. The upper sole was changed only slightly but virtually unnoticeable.  If you watch Runners World's review of the Mirage 4 (see here) they also note how little has changed between the Mirage3 and Mirage 4.

Since so little has changed between the models I highly recommend you read my Mirage 3 review located here.  It proves a detail review of the Mirage model shoe.

Overall this is a great shoe and I highly recommend it for those looking for a lightweight, comfortable, minimalist shoe.  Keep in mind the 4mm heal drop may not be for everyone and I would recommend gradually easing into the shoe.

Take this job and shove it!!

No Johnny, the last job was not that bad!!  And I did leave on good terms.  :-)

I apologize for the lack of updates lately.  For the past few months I've been looking for a new job.  The search took a lot of time away from many aspects of my life (i.e. my house is a disaster). But I am happy to announce that yesterday I started my new job.  The grass is not always greener on the other side but I have hopes that the new job will provide me new growth opportunities.

Hopefully, I will now have some extra time on my hands to provide more posts.

What have my web-friends been up to lately?  Are you being hit by the nasty weather?!

Average Obese Woman Gets 1 Hour of Exercise a Year (Men only 3.6 hours)

Yesterday I read a new study that stated the average obese woman gets only one hour of exercise a year.  Man only do slightly better at 3.6 hours yearly. Another study stated 1 out of 3 people in the US is obese.  That means that 33% of the US population gets less than 3.6 hours of exercise year. (16% gets less than one hour a year).

The study defined "vigorous" exercise as activities that burn fat like jogging and jumping rope, but not sexual activity.  Sexual activity?! Oh...that to easy to make a joke about.  I'm not touching that one.

Just to put this more into perspective.  Here are the average number of hours a year that people spend on other activities (per a 2012 study): (http://www.bls.gov/news.release/atus.t01.htm)
