Throwback Thursday - November 1982

Throwback Thursday - November 1982

Nov 1982 - Pre-child labor laws

Remember the days when kids actually had to do the dishes and things around the house.   The new entitlement generation is going to be in for a world of shock when they move out of the house and find out THEY now have to do all the work and no one is going to pay them for it.
I’ve seen this shock many times while interviewing new, young employees.  Right out of collage they all want 100K, a company car, five weeks paid vacation and never want to work more than forty hours a week.  Some of my friends actually had potential new employees using their parents to negotiate salaries and schedule interviews.  LOL!!  No joke!!
This is me and my stepdad (now passed away) in November 1982 (almost 29 years ago).  I was almost 5 years old and they already had me working like a dog.  I’m pretty sure this picture is proof why the government enacted child labor laws.
My sister is almost exactly 10 years older than me.  When we lived together the dishes were her chore.  She would “subcontract” out her dishes to me for 25 cents or a butt whooping.  I choose the 25 cents (little did she know that I save all those 25 cents and build quite the savings account).  I think I had more money when I was 5 then than I do now.
What chores did you have to do when you were a kid?

  1. Great picture!
Oh man...my most dreaded chore was cleaning the bathroom...ugh.

My brother and I took turns setting and clearing the table. Seems like a pretty easy chore now, but back then it was hell.

  2. That is too cute! My Mom used to make us a list on the weekend. UGH! Hated those lists...

On the radio today they were talking about the "wussification" of America specifically the people coming into the workforce today. That is funny that a parent would call to negiotiate a salary. If I was doing the hiring, that would be an instant NO HIRE situation.

  3. I can't wait until my kids are old enough to do chores! I had to do them and I am so glad. I couldn't believe how many people didn't know how to do laundry when I started college.

  4. Uhm...basically any chore that could qualify as 'helping around the house'. But, they didn't really feel like chores, because it just had to be done. Funny how these 'normal helping out' things turned into things kids are actually asking money for these days...

Us kids were such dumb asses for not asking money for it... ;)

  5. I love the picture!!

Do we count Yen? If so, then I might have got 100k out of college. Otherwise... HAHAHAHAHA! That sounds like something my college roommate - a cut throat business student - would have said.

My family never did much as far as chores. The only thing I got cornered into doing repeatedly was cleaning my room. When I got older, I just did some on my own just to help out.
