Move over GU I have a new love - Honey Stinger Waffles

Move over GU I have a new love - Honey Stinger Waffles

Personally I do not have much of a sweet tooth. I do not like really sweet candies, cakes, pies, etc.  If they are really sweet one bite is good enough for me.  My only downfall is ice-cream.  I can resist all other sweets in the house but ice cream is forbidden.  I would rather pay the extra money to go to the ice-cream parlor than to have it in the house.

This lack of enjoying sweets is hard when you are endurance training.  All the supplements we take are primarily nothing but pure sugar and have a strange gel like texture.  After about my second GU I feel nauseous therefore I avoid taking them when I know I should be. The texture and the sweetness are to much for me.

After some time and searching I found a solution.  The Honey Stinger Waffle!  These waffles are great.  They are waffle thin so they do can stack them side-by-side in your bikes stem bag.  They have a great texture and are only mildly sweet because they are made with honey.  They are also certified organic for you yoga type people.  The ingredients are easily identifiable and are not something I made in my college organic chemistry lab.

This things taste great.  I would love to have them with a small latte or some espresso.  I could eat them all day long.  My only complaint is they are a little pricey at $1.30 US each.  But in comparison that is still about the normal price of a GU.

I highly recommend you try these.  I do not think you will be disappointed.

  1. I really hate the texture of gu. But obviously sweetness isn't an issue for me :) I've been using 'sharkies' on my long runs for a while now, the texture is great and they aren't 'too' sweet!

I haven't seen these waffles around these parts yet but i'll keep an eye out for them!

  2. Honey Stinger Waffles look a lot like my favorite Dutch snack: Stroopwafels! :) Yum! I'm trying to find out whether or not I can get my hand on these in Europe! :)

  3. @Alanna - I think you will like them

@Silly Girl: They appear to be identical to Stroopwafels but are made with honey. I would like to know the ingredients and nutritional facts for Stroopwafels. Maybe they are very similar and I could save some money and purchase those instead.

  4. That looks tasty. Maybe I'll pick up some tonight at Track Shack if they have them. I tried their chews and loved them, but their chocolate honey gel not so much. I like the taste of honey, but not that concentrated. It basically tasted like honey with cocoa powder, which is what it is. I want to make my own gels this way but will try the waffles too.

  7. I have never heard of these things ever, but would love to try them. I don't mind Gu/gels (especially chocolate ... I just pretend that I am eating chocolate syrup) but I am training for a longer race and will need to have all sorts of nutrition tricks up my sleve!
    Where did you find these?

  8. Ice cream is my nemesis! Im with you on GU I just detest it and am actually heading out to buy some different kind so I can texture compare. Ive been thinking about those chewy things. Ill have to look for this and give it a try! Im always up for something new!

  9. @Kitzy - They do not have the concentrated honey flavor. They are very subtle.

@Laurie - You can get these at nearly all the cycling stores, some running stores, sometimes Sports Authority, maybe REI and all over online.

@Jessie - Now I would try Ice Cream flavored GU.

  10. Yum, I first tried Honey Stinger energy bars at Philly Livestrong last year and I was hooked! The waffles are just as yummy. I just ordered a box of the apple cinnamon energy bars- haven't tried them yet. The peanut butter ones taste a lot like a butterfinger bar but not nearly as disgustingly sweet. I also ordered some of the gummy-type energy chews, since I love clif shot-bloks I want to do a comparison.
So far all their products have been really great! I hope to start finding them in more stores soon.
